News in Jefferson Country from Pie N Politics.com Editor Liz Bowen: There is good news for the Jefferson Statehood movement this week as the Butte County Board of Supervisors heard the reasons to withdraw from the State of California at their April 22nd meeting.

Mark Baird, spokesman for the Jefferson Declaration Committee was given 20 minutes to speak and then at least 20 more Jefferson State supporters addressed the supervisors.

“The room was packed to standing room only,” said Mark, adding that no one spoke in opposition. “I told the supervisors it is really all about restoring representation and they acknowledged that we have little representation in California. The real point of the State of Jefferson is to get a senator elected in every county,” said Mark. “This would then provide equal representation from the rural counties.

Butte Supervisor Larry Wahl took the lead championing the idea of a 51st State. Wahl brought the idea of placing another discussion and or possible vote on the approval of the Declaration to the next board meeting agenda in June. Several more supervisors eventually jumped on board and voted to discuss the item again.

Only one supervisor, rancher Steve Lambert argued against a new state saying he had learned to live with the many regulations legislated by California and thought that a new free state would attract too many people.

Mark Baird will be on the road again next week as he will be speaking in Trinity County on May 3rd at noon in Weaverville explaining how to create the 51st State of Jefferson.
